Jamie Stone, Hertfordshire County Council

Newly Qualified Adult Social Worker of the Year

“Jamie is a social worker in one of Hertfordshire’s largest and busiest community learning disability teams and his nomination was described by judges as “beautiful, inspiring, loaded with values and integrity”.

Jamie’s passion and the impact he has had on the lives of his service users was evident throughout the entry. In particular, the panel were impressed with his imaginative thinking while working with a service user  with severe agoraphobia. By using a Wii console and sports games, Jamie  encouraged them to leave their house to increase their score on a walking game,  making huge steps that more experienced social workers had failed to achieve.

In addition to his normal social work responsibilities, Jamie co-led a workshop with a national charity on the subject of voting rights for those with learning disabilities. It was so successful that he is now in discussion with other teams in Hertfordshire to develop it into a countywide  programme. He has also used this initiative to inform and encourage his colleagues to empower and promote service users’ civil rights.

In addition, Jamie makes excellent use of supervision, regularly reflects back on his practice and is universally liked and respected by colleagues and managers alike.”

What was said about the Jamie:

“Jamie is a very real and tangible example of someone who is carrying out thoughtful and sensitive social work. He came across as very passionate, warm, creative and engaging and is obviously well liked by everyone in his team.” Brian Mitchell, Practice Teacher of the Year 2013

“This is one of the many ways that I can show Jamie how valued and respected he is as a social worker. He demonstrates passion, imagination, a cracking sense of humour  and complete dedication.” Louise Donaldson, Team Manager, Hertfordshire County Council

“Jamie has been really good to work with and has helped us to get things sorted with our health appointments, paper work and bills which has made us feel more at ease and much happier. He’s done a really good job and is such a nice bloke.” Two brothers, Service Users

“It’s so important that we promote the fact that NQSWs can make a positive impact on your team, which is exactly what Jamie has done. He’s also made a big difference to the lives of service users – he’s obviously a cracking social worker.” Dez Holmes, Director, Research in Practice
