The Tees Valley Local Authority Children’s Services are delighted to sponsor the Newly Qualified Social Worker of the Year Award.  It demonstrates our commitment to and investment in the professional development of social workers in the Tees Valley.

Tees Valley is made up of five local authorities, Darlington Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton.  It is located in North East England, nestled between North Yorkshire and County Durham. The area is beautiful and diverse, home to vibrant towns, picturesque villages and impressive historic venues. We are lucky to have some of the most stunning countryside on our doorstep, as well as impressive coastlines that are framed by our dramatic industrial heritage making it the ideal place to work and live.

Tees Valley is one of the most fertile places for developing talent with the ever expanding Teesside University, home to 29,000 students.  The Tees Valley local authorities work in partnership with Teesside University and with other Higher Education establishments in the north east region to provide high quality training for social work students and qualified practitioners.  We also actively explore new opportunities for professional qualification routes and participate in programmes such as the Frontline, Step Up to Social Work and work with the Open University.  In the coming year Firstline management development will be rolled out in the region.  Social workers in Tees Valley benefit from good employment and professional development opportunities and enjoy an excellent work/life balance.

Tees Valley local authorities provide qualifying social workers with an excellent Assessed and Supported Year in Employment.  We have sub regional portfolio moderation arrangements where workers receive evaluation and feedback on their portfolios from managers in another local authority bringing a new perspective to their professional development.  Newly qualified social workers are protected in their workloads and benefit from mentoring, group supervision, dedicated CPD time and strong management support and oversight.

Social workers who make up the Tees Valley workforce benefit from a friendly, can do and welcoming culture and those who join us from other areas, stay with us.  All the local authorities highly value social work, making sure that those most vulnerable in society are protected, valued and supported to better futures.  We believe in the values of social work and make sure our workforce is given the skills, knowledge, tools, time and encouragement necessary to make a real difference to the lives of those with whom they work.

We actively promote the professional development of our workforce through shared learning opportunities and are increasingly working more collaboratively across the sub region to the mutual benefit of all.  We aim to always be at the forefront of developing social work practice and participate in a number of initiatives exploring new ways of working and widen the experiences of our workforce.
